To travel to the Rwenzori region, one usually has to drive across the country for about 8 hours after landing at Uganda’s only international airport in Entebbe.
Since July 2012, there is again the possibility to fly directly from the airport in Entebbe to Kasese in only 1 hour by a small plane as an alternative.
In the past, when the Kilembe copper mine was still in operation, the small airport was actively used. Just as Pope John Paul II did when he visited Uganda in 1993 and also visited Kasese.
Then came the war, unrest and rebels from the Congo and airport operations were more or less suspended. Only UN helicopters flew from here to the Congo.
When we started our project in 2004, it was unthinkable that a regular flight schedule would be possible in the foreseeable future.
But in 2012, the time had come.
We flew from Entebbe directly to Kasese. The trip is not cheap – about 200€ one way. But it’s a sign that things are looking up. And beyond that, it was a lot of fun.
