In 1991, the Rwenzori Mountains National Park was established on the Ugandan side of the Rwenzori Mountains.
This includes the central part of the Rwenzori Mountains with its lush rainforests.
The 996 km² national park was established to protect the landscape and the flora and fauna and to preserve them for the future. Today, the protected area is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
The highest peaks in Rwenzori National Park are located at over 5,000 meters and are covered with snow all year round. This is where the name “Rwenzori” comes from, which means “mountains with snow on them” in the language of the local Bakonzo people. Rwenzori is often mistakenly translated as “rainmaker” or “cloud mountains” – although both names accurately describe the characteristics of the mountain range.
Since 1994, the Rwenzori National Park has been part of the Unesco World Natural Heritage.
The water of the Rwenzori is the most important source of the Nile.
Dozens of species of animals and plants are found only in this place on Earth.
To get there, you have to take a long hike that leads through the breathtaking nature of the Rwenzori area.
